Roleplay Mechanics - Farming

Post by Aegonian on Wed Jan 18, 2012 4:21 pm

Farming
A small guide to farming

I assume everyone wishing to enter this roleplay knows how farming works in Minecraft, so here, I just wish to list a number of things you should keep in mind when farming, or when building farms:

-We prefer dry farms: they are more realistic. First off, when using dry farms, it takes more time for your crops to grow. At first, this may seem like a bad thing, but when using 'wet' farms, the crops grow so fast that you will quickly run out of storage place for your wheat and bread. Secondly, dry farms make rain useful, as rain will change dry farmland into wet farmland, and thus speed up the growing process. This applies to crops, pumpkins, melons etc (anything that doesn't require water to grow).

-Wet farming next to natural ponds is allowed. When farming next to a pond, you can also farm sugar canes.

-We prefer above-ground farms. Underground farms work for mushrooms, but not for wheat farms.

-Farms should be more than a patch of farmland: they should be surrounded by fences, keeping monsters and thieves out, and there should be a farmhouse, where the farmer lives, not too far from the farmland. Large farms should also have storage cabins.

-The use of bonemeal is allowed, as long as you don't overuse it. Bonemeal is especially useful when in high need of wheat, while the crops are still small.

Ok, I got it. I'm going to be the Gardenhall farmer, and I will keep this in consideration. Also....are we allowed to farm cane?

Are you allowed to farm nether wart? And do you have to use rain for melons too? Also, when is the page about the Draton Village coming up?

Farming cane is allowed: growing it along natural shores would be best. It is possible to create a small pool close to one's farm though: just don't use straight, 1 block wide water pools.
Farming Nether Wart is impossible on the surface world, as far as I know. You'll have to go to the Nether for that. However, the Nether won't be available in the RP until after a certain event.
Melons and pumpkins should use dry farms too, unless of course you grow them around a small (natural-looking) pool.

The pages about Sharome, Woodgarden and Rhodenburgh will be added throughout the next few days.

Hopefully Bukkit will be updated soon: I am looking forward to the Roleplay.

Wet farming next to natural ponds is okay.
Bonemeal can be used, but if you do, try not to overuse it. It should be used when you are in high need of wheat, for example.

What about bonemealing Mushrooms? We need ale and fast sometimes! If we can use it, it looks like the dwarves will buy lots of bones...

We need ale, fast!

Also, can I own a small village/farm south of the (fort) in Worrak?

Hmm... I think bonemealing mushrooms is okay. After all, mushrooms grow very slowly, and you need one of each kind for every mug of beer. Just remove the Giant Mushrooms right after growing them: they don't really fit our world, so it is best for them to be removed as quickly as possible.

As for Jorgas' request for a village/farm: you can probably start building a small farm in the RP, which could, over time, grow into a small village, but you'll need permission from the Dhaguran General first: he (or she) is the leader of the Draton in Gaekylha. Currently, however, there is no General: to become one, one should send me a small application, which must convince me that the sender would make a good leader.

It would be interesting if the general was a vampire himself... That would turn a minor character into a huge plot of its own...

That would make for an interesting plot indeed... do you think you can lead the Draton as their General? No-one's applied so far, and the Aeduri still need a leader too. Thunderpants will be the Gordnor King, I guess, and the Bomur have no leader: they have a council, in which every citizen is allowed to take part.
