Hyperspace Travel

Hyperspace is a dimension in which the rules of physics are slightly different from those in the 'normal' dimension, generally called the Oversphere, in which the largest part of our story takes place. Hyperspace, for example, allows speeds thousands of times higher than that of light: Thus allowing for FTL travel.

To enter Hyperspace, a so-called Hyperdrive is needed, which is an engine-like machine that can create a gateway between dimensions. Obviously, this gateway has a limited size, and thus, large ships often require several, more powerful Hyperdrives.
As activating the Hyperdrive will make anything in its immediate surroundings enter Hyperspace, spaceships are required to position themselves in an open space before activating the Hyperdrives. Most ships feature a Hyper-Lock, which is a system of scanners that prevent the Hyperdrive from being activated if the ship is too close to other objects.

In order to create a gateway between the two dimensions, the Hyperdrive must bend the Oversphere's Dimensional Fabric in such a way that it will overlaps with Hyperspace's Dimensional Fabric. Due to the way these Fabrics bend, a gateway is always spherical. It transports matter and energy only at the very surface of this sphere: be inside the sphere, and you will remain where you are.
In order to transport an entire ship from one dimension to the other, the Hyperdrive must steadily power up: this way, the sphere is created at the very center of the Hyperdrive, and expands outwards, thus ensuring that the entire ship comes into contact with the sphere's surface.
Only one thing is left behind by a ship travelling from one dimension to the other: the pure Hyverium Core of the Hyperdrive. This Core is generally very small: for carrier-sized ship, it is only 0.1 millimeters in diameter. In order for the ship to be able to travel back into its  original dimension, it must be carrying several Cores.

A clarifying visual representation of this system will be added soon.

Jumptech

Jumptech is the technology that allows spaceships and other objects to instantly travel from one place in a dimension, to an other, no matter the distance between those two points. It is also possible to 'jump' energy or data (without a physical carrier), but this is often judged inefficient, and thus hardly ever used.

In order to perform a jump (or 'space-jump', as it is often called), one needs a Jumptech Ring, with a diameter of at least twice the diameter of the 'jumper'.
A Jumptech Ring is a segmented ring of Cerreverium, an alloy of Cerrelium and Hyverium. The segments of this ring can freely rotate along the Ring's inner Cerreverium ring. The Ring is attached to any number of Hyverium Piston-Arms, which are attached to the jumper (usually to a ship's hull).

When a powerful surge of Obligen (the energy generated by the Elithian plant 'Obligen Collens') passes through the Cerreverium Ring, it will start to rotate, and its segments will rotate, too. This movement will generate a 'portal' in the ring, which links to any other location in the same dimension. The ring then passes over the jumper, effectively jumping the jumper to its destination. Then the ring, thanks to Cerreverium's unique physical properties, shrinks, turns inside-out, and pulls itself into the portal. Upon doing so, the portal is closed, and the Ring is jumped to the same location as the jumper.

Here is a clarifying visual representation of the Jumptech Ring:

Common Technologies Jumpga11

The block represents the jumper, the moving bar represent the Jumptech Gate, and the black lines represent the pistons connecting the Jumptech Gate to the jumper.
Parts that have jumped show inverted colours (e.g. the ship goes from blue to orange, the gate from purple to green).

Other forms of FTL travel

Hyperspace travel and space-jumping are the only forms of FTL travel commonly used by the Alliance: other forms have been theorized, some have even been tested, but none have been proven efficient enough using modern technology. One of the forms of FTL travel that was heavily investigated prior to the Blast was 'waving', a technique that used space-bending drive cores, much like those used for space-jumping, to create FTL waves in spacetime that can carry vessels with them.

Data Signatures

A Data Signature is a spaceship's signature, which differentiates its user from all other spaceships. The signature is often written in the Centensian alphabet.
All Data Signatures follow the form '#fleet ship-model ship-number "TITLE"'.
An example is the Prevox' Data Signature:
#aeg42 tz9 98772 "PREVOX"
Here, 'aeg42' is the abbreviation of the fleet's title: Aegota42.
'tz9' Is the ship's modle: An Aeginian TZ9 Cruiser.
'98772' Is the ship's number. These numbers are usually used in Empires' Ship Lists, which list all active ships under their control.
"PREVOX" is the ship's title: The Prevox.
Capital letters are only used for the ship's title.

The use of Data Signatures to identify stellar travellers was first used by the Centens, and was later adopted by many other empires. The system fell into decline as the Elithian Alliance rose, as the Alliance tended to use only the ships' titles and numbers. Almost all ships had a Data Signature, but they were hardly ever used.
After the Blast, many ships have started using the system again.

Hyverium Enhancement

Hyverium Enhancement is the technology of enhancing 'normal' matter with Hyverium, giving it new, sometimes physics-defying properties properties, based on the amount of added Hyverium, and the properties of the original matter.

Hyverium itself is still a poorly-understood substance: scientists now believe it to be made of subatomic particles that can bind to 'normal' atoms. Hyverium in its purest form is a gel-like substance that has many uses: the best known use is its ability to bend the Dimensional Fabric, which can be used for Interdimensional Travel (and as such, is required for Hyperpsace Travel). In order to enhance matter with Hyverium, the mix of matter and Hyverium must be heated to 50,000 K. This will bind the Hyverium to the atoms of the original matter. In order to reverse the enhancement, the enhanced matter must be heated to 50,000 K again, and an electric current must be applied. The current will force the Hyverium particles to detach from whatever atom they were bound to.

Previously, Hyverium was believed to be a new metal: this was incorrect, as the substance then known as Hyverium was actually Ferroverium, the Hyverium-enhanced form of iron.

Information Centers

The Alliance used many gigantic Information Centers, which were used to send information form planet to planet almost instantly, allowing real-time communications over the Alliance Network. The ICs (Information Centers) use advanced jumpdrives to maintain permanent connections between planets and other locations: the information is transmitted using light, which is beamed through the jump-portal.
Some spacestations also feature ICs, but as ICs are very large, most stations simply don't have enough space for an IC.

As jump-portals can only link two locations at a time, the Alliance uses Information Hubs, which are gigantic spacestations that hold many ICs. The IHs (Information Hubs) are disc-shaped stations, which can link up to a hundred ICs at a time. All information is sent into the Hub Core, where it is quickly processed, and forwarded to the right locations. Back-up IHs also exist: in case of a system failure on the main IH, the back-up IH can take over all communications within a few minutes. Once activated, the back-up IHs become the new main IHs, so that there does not have to be another Network interruption when switching back to the main IH.

Trink Shells

The physical life-form of a Trink, connected to the Trink Servers and fully insulated from ionising radiation and electronic magnetic radiation capable of short circuiting their electronics.

Several Models exist:
-Trink-0: A true relic, the first Trinks ever made. They where still Genetically-engineered biological lifeforms in Metal Cases
-Trink-1: The iconic bipedal Trink.
-Trink-2: A rarer variation of the Trink-1, that runs it's own AI within it, and is capable of supporting other Trinks in emergency scenarios.
-Mega Trink: A supersized and superpowered Trink, designed for heavy lifting
-Trink Hybrid: A relic of a previous Era. A concept still widely regarded by the AI as a good idea however.
-Hex Trink: A new less mobile model based upon the Trink-1. They sacrifice legs for an additional 4 limbs with specialist equipment, designed for the repair of delicate robotic or organic systems.

Trink Processing

Trink Processing is the process of communicating all information from the shell of a Trink AI, back to its server to be analysed and acted up with commands sent back to the Trink Shell. This process relies upon the concept of Quantum Entanglement so that data can be transferred instantly across infinite distances. The Trink shell first compresses its information into binary, sending packets of information at a time, in a system designed with checksums in place to allow the reconstruction of any corrupted packets. This is then relayed to one of the Trinks Quantum Transmitter circuits that alter the spin of several quantum particles entangled to particles back in the receiver circuits of the servers. Each sensory input has its own transfer channel so that all the data may be considered by the server AI.

Once set the server AI can deal with the data using fibre-optics, superconductors and other quantum particles to quickly analyse the data and send back the relevant actions to the Trink Shell. In processes that require more data, the data streams from other nearby Trink Shells can be considered, and an action decided upon by the 2 AIs can take place.

Gravity Assisted Photon Accelerator

A strong artificial gravity field is projected towards its target with a maximum range of 40 AU for Battleship sized installations. This field then redirects all of the Photons contained within it towards its target, acting like a high power laser. The benefit of this technology compared to regular lasers is that, firing does not need to be sustained. The field can be flashed on to redirect and then shut off, whilst still causing substantial damage.

Today, I got bored at school, and started thinking of a more detailed description of Hyperspace travel, involving overlapping dimensional fabrics, which are best understood when visualizing several two-dimensional planes in a three-dimensional space, positioned parallel to each other. If you would be able to bulge one of these planes, it would overlap at least one other plane, thus creating a space in which a ship could be in two dimensions at once. By then flattening the plane again, a ship could be left behind in a dimension other than the one it was originally in.
Now that Hyperspace travel has been improved, I'll also start thinking of a way to better explain jumping using Jumptech Gates.

I don't think the above text will make any sense to you, so I'll create a visual representation sometime soon. Pictures are much easier to understand.

Makes perfect sense to me, It's similar to worm hole theory.

It's like putting on a badge, you bend the fabric so you can easily put the pin/needle in and then re-straighten the fabric. Right?

It does have quite some similarities to wormhole theory. The biggest difference is that Hyperspace travel involves two planes: one is the object's (in this case the ship's) original dimension, the other is Hyperspace. By bulging the original dimension's dimensional fabric into that of Hyperspace, one can travel from one dimension to the other.

Little picture:
Common Technologies Hypers10
Red line is the original dimension, black is Hyperspace, the blue parts are the 'gateways', where the two dimensions overlap, and the green block is the spaceship.
The reason the ship 'sticks' to the black line (Hyperspace) when it touches it, is quite simple: matter and energy 'try' to position themselves in 'straight / unbent' dimensions. In order to travel back to the original dimension, Hyperspace will have to be bent in such a way that it will overlap with the original dimension.

A form of wormhole theory is what I will use for the Jumpgates: bending spacetime the way you bend fabric when putting on a badge, allowing the ship (the point of the needle) to travel from one location to the other very quickly.

Another little picture:
Common Technologies Jump_t10
Black line is space-time, red line shows the distance that has to be traveled to get from one location to the other.

Okay that makes a lot more sense.

However are there more than one Hyperspaces. (Like multiple frequencies for example.)

And what happens if the device opening the gate shuts?

I was thinking of having the Hyperdrive work on multiple frequencies (the Hyverium Core must vibrate for the gateway to be opened): the frequency will determine what dimension is opened.

If the device is for some reason deactivated while the ship is still passing through the gate, the ship is destroyed: the gate is instantly closed, so the part that is still in the original dimension remains there, the part that has already entered Hyperspace will remain there.
