Re: An Elithian Alliance game
A thought, the Darkness steal technology from others. Their special ability could be to salvage/infest destroyed buildings/ships, and use them for their own schemes. However, they would need some unit to infest them. Make sure it's not called a Infester or Brood Lord or anything, because then Blizzard might get angry.
Another idea for the Darkness would be that in battles you can create some sort of Hive Mind unit. At first they would increase attack and armor, but if it dies the Darkness will turn feral. Then they would retreat and do random actions that you can't command. If your Hive Mind dies, then you can appoint your strongest unit as one.

The hive mind mechanic reminds me of the Tyranids for Warhammer 40k.
Also again Notix Technology is inspired from the races who they meet and the environments they encounter. These races are scarily similar.

I have never played Warhammer 40k, in my defense.
Well, the Darkness kind of ruin worlds by covering them with spawn pools and killing everything. That's one thing different.

Re: An Elithian Alliance game
Active technology salvaging is awesome and allows for unique playthroughs depending on who your enemies are, but we'll have to balance it very carefully. We wouldn't want one of the salvagers to obtain their most powerful technology, as that could turn into an unfair fight. Maybe we can restrict what kind of technologies can be salvaged, or reduce the effectiveness of salvaged technologies? The Dremeton, for example, have started using certain laser-based Thelean weapons, but they are nowhere near as powerful as the originals.

Again very alike the tyranids...
I would just say the tyranids are what the zerg ared based of. Starcraft was originally a Warhammer 40,000 game but the Warhammer guys pulled the plug.
And yes special salvaged forms of technology would be cool, even if it just sped up research into the equivalent technology for you/
Re: An Elithian Alliance game
Well, I really have no knowledge of the Tyraninds, so if you can tell me something that would make the Darkness different, go ahead and tell me.

Are the Darkness entirely Biological? I mean do they use Biological Ships and Biological Weapons?
If yes, make sure they aren't sharp, pointy and bug-like.

Re: An Elithian Alliance game
They are Biological and use biological ships/weapons. Some of them are bug like, while others are more reptilian. Most of them have some sort of lance-like spike or other blade-like objects grown into them.

Not like that. More like a slimy bug-reptile. Go on spore to see.
